Since Bursa Airport, near downtown Bursa in the Yunuseli Neighborhood, is not suitable for departure and arrival of passenger and cargo aircraft with large fuselage (runway dimensions: 1395m x 30m) and for the purpose of constructing a modern terminal and facilities it has been decided to open the existent military airbase of Turkish Air Force, 10 km west of Yenişehir County (İlçe), to the civil traffic. After the bid on this purpose the project was started in July 13, 1995 by the company Mak-Yol A.Ş.. Under this project a new runway (07L/25R) has been built parallel to the existing military runway (07R/25L). Besides, an apron, a taxiway connecting apron to runway, terminal building, auxiliary service buildings, driveway, navigation aids (an ILS, VOR, NDB and Marker and two DME`s) have been constructed and delivered to DHMİ (State Airports Authority). Thus Bursa has had a considerably modern terminal as well as a runway with dimensions of 2993m x 45m. The newly constructed runway has been equipped with an advanced lighting system (CAT II) including touch-down zone and centreline lights in addition to ILS (Instrument Landing System). The usable area of the newly built terminal open to passenger, both domestic and international, is 5600 m2; its passenger capacity is 2.250.000 passengers/year.
For the construction of cargo building the project was begun on May 2, 1997 again by Mak-Yol A.Ş. and on May 20, 2001 it was opened for service after the final approval granted. Under this project, a cargo building with 9460 m2 covered space and 8 cold air depots each 115 m3 has been built and 10.000 m2 parking lot has been constructed.
Official opening of Bursa-Yenişehir Airport was organized on November 3, 2000. After setting up some lacking facilities like runway lighting it was declared open to civil air traffic on June 1, 2001. On the same day Bursa Airport in Yunuseli was closed to air traffic and left to Turkish Air Force. For the time being the former Bursa Airport in Yunuseli is still closed to air traffic.
On May 21, 2001 the Cabinet, with decision rumber 2001/2444, announced Bursa-Yenişehir Airport as a permanent border gate. Thus, Yenişehir Airport opened to international air traffic.
